Refaat Ahmed named new chief justice

Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed of the High Court Division of the Supreme Court has been made the 25th Chief Justice of Bangladesh.

President Mohammed Shahabuddin appointed him on Saturday night.

Earlier this afternoon, Chief Justice Obaidul Hasan stepped down in response to a student protest today, where demonstrators issued an ultimatum for him and the judges of the Appellate Division to resign.
