Justice Ashfaqul Islam of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court is set to become the acting Chief Justice of Bangladesh, according to officials at the Law and Justice Division.

Outgoing Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan submitted his resignation to the Law Ministry on Saturday, August 10, following widespread student protests. Justice Ashfaqul Islam will assume the role of acting Chief Justice once the resignation takes effect, the officials said, seeking anonymity.

Asif Nazrul, the Adviser for Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs, confirmed the resignation of Obaidul Hasan but refrained from providing details on who will be appointed as the new chief justice.

"We will not make an announcement now. We will seek the opinion of the chief adviser and consult with the relevant stakeholders. If my ministry has a role in this matter, I will strive to appoint the most qualified, honest, and impartial person as the chief justice," said Asif Nazrul.
