Chief Justice Obaidul Hasan has resigned in the face of student protests.

He submitted submitted his resignation letter to the law ministry on Sunday afternoon, said Asif Nazrul, the adviser for Law, Judges and Parliamentary Affairs Ministry. Asif said the minisrty will send the resignation letter to the president's office immediately.

Earlier around noon, Justice Obaidul said he decided to resign from his position as Chief Justice of Bangladesh.

His decision came in response to a student protest today, where demonstrators issued an ultimatum for him and the judges of the Appellate Division to resign by 1:00pm.

Otherwise, they threatened to besiege their residences, according to Hasnat Abdullah, one of the coordinators of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.

Speaking to journalists at the Supreme Court premises, the Chief Justice stated that he has chosen to resign to ensure the safety of judges from the Supreme Court, High Court, and lower courts across the country amid the escalating situation.

"There are some formalities to complete for the resignation. Once done, I will send my resignation letter to President Mohammed Shahabuddin by this evening," he added.
