Resume duties by Thursday, new IGP orders police personnel

Inspector General of Police Md Mainul Islam has directed all police personnel to report for duty by Thursday evening. 

He made the announcement at a press conference held at the Police Headquarters in Dhaka on Wednesday afternoon.

Mainul acknowledged that the police had fallen short of public expectations during the recent student movement, which sparked widespread anger.

"We want to start anew to ensure the security of lives and property," he said. "All police personnel are directed to resume their duties by Thursday evening."

The IGP also admitted operational shortcomings in handling the student movement, which led to the loss of lives, including those of students, civilians, and police officers. "As the IGP, I apologise for everything," he said.
