Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus has been selected to lead the interim government.

This decision was made during a meeting between President Mohammed Shahabuddin and leaders of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, the platform behind the recent uprising.

The meeting, held on Tuesday night at Bangabhaban, was attended by the chiefs of the three services and two Dhaka University teachers.

Following the six-hour meeting, Nahid Islam, one of the coordinators of the students’ platform, informed journalists just after midnight that the decision to form an interim government headed by Muhammad Yunus had been reached.

“We proposed the name of Dr Muhammad Yunus as the head of the interim government, and the President agreed with us,” Nahid stated. He also mentioned that a preliminary list of members for the interim administration, including individuals from civil society and student representatives, had been submitted.

Dhaka University teacher Asif Nazrul confirmed Nahid's statements, echoing the details of the meeting.

The meeting began shortly after 6:00 pm on Tuesday, when 13 coordinators of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement arrived at Bangabhaban to discuss the country's current situation and the outline of the interim government with the President. Around 7:40 pm, the chiefs of the three services joined the discussions.

These developments follow widespread student agitation, which led to the resignation of Sheikh Hasina as prime minister and her departure from the country on Monday (August 5). Her younger sister, Sheikh Rehana, also left the country.
