Hasina reaches Agartala, Delhi to provide ‘safe passage’
Sheikh Hasina has arrived in India after resigning on Monday (August 5).
She left Bangladesh for Agartala, India, with her sister Sheikh Rehana and other family members, according to reports.
Indian broadcaster CNN-News18 confirmed that Sheikh Hasina has already reached India. Citing intelligence sources, the media also reported that the Indian government will provide 'safe passage' for the former Prime Minister of Bangladesh to travel to other countries.
The Hindustan Times also confirmed the news of Sheikh Hasina's arrival in India. Prominent Indian media outlets like Times of India, Hindustan Times, and The Hindu have been providing live updates on the situation in Bangladesh, with the anti-discrimination student movement and Sheikh Hasina's resignation being the top stories on their homepages.
A person close to Sheikh Hasina told AFP that she and her sister left Ganabhaban and moved to a secure location. Before departing, she wished to record a farewell speech, but was not afforded the opportunity.
According to Reuters, Sheikh Hasina and her family members left for India in a military helicopter.
