94 killed in clashes across the country
At least 94 people, including 14 police personnel, were killed on Sunday (August 4) during clashes and attacks on the first day of the non-cooperation movement, an anti-discrimination student protest demanding the government's resignation. This figure is based on information provided by Jago News correspondents in Dhaka and various districts.
Dhaka: 8 Killed
In the capital, eight people were confirmed dead by 10 p.m. on Sunday. Among them was Anwarul Islam, a member of the Executive Committee of Dhaka Metropolitan North Awami League, who died during a clash between Awami League supporters and protesters in Uttara. The bodies of seven others are at the Dhaka Medical College morgue.
Sirajganj: 27 Killed, Including 13 Policemen
A violent attack on Enayetpur police station in Sirajganj led to the deaths of 13 policemen, according to police headquarters. Additionally, at least 14 people were killed in clashes in Raiganj upazila and Sirajganj town. The conflict also triggered riots in Sirajganj town.
Abul Kalam Azad, General Secretary of Raiganj Upazila Awami League, reported that leaders and activists were gathered at the party office from the morning. Around noon, BNP-Jamaat-e-Islami supporters surrounded the office and launched an attack, resulting in six deaths and injuring about fifty activists.
The deceased were identified as Golam Sarwar Liton, Chairman of Raiganj Brahmagacha Union Parishad (UP), his brother Golam Hossain Titu, General Secretary of the Union Awami League, Mehedi Hasan Ilyas, President of the Upazila Swechchhasebak League, Alamin Sarkar, General Secretary of the Swechchhasebak League, Jahangir Alam, former General Secretary of the Upazila Chhatra League, and Pradeep Kumar, a correspondent of the Daily Khabar Patra.
Dr Bellal Hossain, a medical officer at the Upazila Health Complex, confirmed the deaths and said that 33 injured individuals were admitted to the hospital, with some in critical condition being transferred to Dhaka.
In the afternoon, a clash erupted in the district town between BCL leaders and participants of the anti-discrimination student movement, resulting in the deaths of three individuals: Ranju Rahman, Joint General Secretary of the town unit Juba Dal, Sumon, and Abdul Latif from the municipal area.
Amidst the conflict, properties belonging to Awami League leaders, including Member of Parliament Jannat Ara Henry, former MP Dr Habibe Millat, Sirajganj-6 MP Chayan Islam, and former Cabinet Secretary Kabir Bin Anwar, were vandalised and set on fire. Various government offices, such as the Sadar AC Land Office, Fisheries Office, LGED Office, District Disaster and Relief Office, and Election Office, were also targeted in the attacks.
Bogura: 4 Killed
In Bogura, at least four people were killed and hundreds injured during the non-cooperation programme. The victims, some of whom were shot, were taken to Bogura Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital. The hospital deputy director, Abdul Wadud, said that a total of four bodies have been brought to the hospital and two of them were shot dead.
Rangpur: 4 Killed
In Rangpur, clashes between protesters and Awami League members led to the deaths of four people, including Haradhan Roy Hara, a ward councilor and local Awami League leader. Many others were injured. Mahmudur Rahman Titu, the former panel mayor of Rangpur City Corporation and councilor of ward 19, and Mizanur Rahman, who is in charge of the Sardar Room of Rangpur Medical College Hospital, confirmed the death of the four people.
Narsingdi: 6 Killed
Six people were killed in clashes between Awami League leaders and protesters in Narsingdi, including the grandson of MP Nazrul Islam Hiru (Bir Pratik). The bodies were taken home by relatives without autopsy, according to local police. Kamruzzaman, officer-in-charge of Madhabadi police station, told reporters that six Awami League leaders have been killed.
Sherpur: 5 Killed
In Sherpur, five people died after being injured in clashes between protesters and Awami League members and police. The victims included students and local residents.The deceased are identified as Tushar,24, a student of Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology and a resident of the district town, Mahbub Alam,21 of Pakuria Chaitankhila, Shardul Ashis Saurabh,22,of Paikura area of Jhenaigati, Sabuj of Ruparpara area of Sribardi upazila, Hasan, 20, and Mim Akhter,18, of the district headquarters.
Habiganj: 1 Killed
A salon employee named Liton Sheel was killed in a clash with Awami League members in Habiganj. Over 200 people were injured in the incident.
Cumilla: 3 Killed
In Cumilla, three people were killed in separate incidents during clashes between protesters and Awami League supporters. One of the victims was a police officer beaten to death in a police station.
Entering Eliotganj highway police station, a mob lynched a policeman named Ershad,29, confired Officer-in-Charge of Elliotganj Highway Police Station Manjurul Alam. Besides, a person named Rubel,33, was killed in the clash between Awami League and Chhatra League with the protesting students. The incident took place at Baniapara area of Debidwar municipality around 2:15pm. On the same day, a youth,25, was beaten and injured in Kotbari area of Cumilla. He later died while undergoing treatment at the hospital. However, hospital sources could not confirm the identity.
Barihsal: 1 Killed
In Barishal, a ward Awami League leader named Tutul Chowdhury, 60, was killed during a clash with protesters. The incident occurred in the Karim Kutir Battala area of the city.
Feni: 5 Killed
At least five people were killed during an attack on anti-discrimination protesters in Feni. Many others, including journalists and pedestrians, were injured, confirmed Feni General Hospital’s resident medical officer Dr Asif Iqbal.
Lakshmipur: 10 Killed
In Lakshmipur, ten people, mostly Awami League supporters, were killed during clashes and shootings with anti-discrimination activists. The number of casualties may rise as many injured are in critical condition. The dead were Osman Gani, Md Kawsar, Saad Al Afnan, Tauhid Kabir, Rafi, Riaz Chowdhury, Ahmed Sharif, Harun Mollah, Sifat Chowdhury and Russell. Most of the dead were Awami League supporters. Resident Medical Officer of Laksmipur Sadar Hospital Dr Arup Pal said, 53 injured people have been brought to the hospital till afternoon. Most of them sustained bullet wounds.
Sylhet: 5 Killed
Five people were shot dead during a clash between police and protesters in Sylhet's Golapganj upazila, said Golapganj Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Dr Sudarshan Sen. The victims included local residents and activists.
Bhola: 1 Killed
A businessman named Jasim Uddin was shot dead during violence in Bhola.
Kishoreganj: 3 Killed
Three people were killed in a three-way clash in Kishoreganj, with bodies being sent to local hospitals for autopsy.
Munshiganj: 3 Killed
Three people died in clashes in Munshiganj, confirmed by local health officials.
Magura: 4 Killed
In Magura Sadar and Mohammadpur upazilas, four people, including a student leader and a university student, were killed in clashes between protesters, BNP and the police. The deceased are district Chhatra Dal joint editor Mehedi Hasan Rabbi, 25, Suman Sheikh, 19, son of Pannu Sheikh of Balidia village in Mohammadpur, Ahad ,18, son of Yunus Mia of Sadar in the same upazila, and Mohammad Farhad,22, a student of Islamic history of Chittagong University, son of Gholam Mostafa of Rainagar village in Sripur. At least 20 people including three policemen were injured.
Pabna: 3 Killed
Three people were killed during anti-discrimination protests in Pabna, with at least 40 others injured.
