Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has cancelled the pension scheme, which was proposed for the employees of the public universities, autonomous and government institutions.

She made the announcement after a meeting with the leaders of Peshajibi Samanway Parishad (Professional Coordination Council) at Ganabhaban on Saturday.

Earlier, the teachers, officials and employees of all public universities started observing all-out work abstention programme from July 1 demanding three-point demand including the cancellation of the ‘Prottoy Scheme’ under the Universal Pension.

The teachers earlier said they will continue their movement until their demands are met.

The Universal Pension Scheme started its journey on August 17, 2023 with four schemes: Prabashi, Pragati, Suraksha, and Equality.

On March 13 this year, the government introduced the ‘Prottoy’ scheme for employees who join public universities and other organisations that fall under the scheme from 1 July 2024 onwards.

On July 13, Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said the misunderstanding over the Universal Pension Scheme was removed and all of public and autonomous institutions will come under it on July 1, 2025.
