Police, anti-quota protesters clash at DU

A clash broke out between police and the anti-quota protesters at Dhaka University on Wednesday afternoon.   

The clash ensued at 4:15pm after police opened sound grenades and tear shells on the students when they brought out a procession from the DU’s Vice Chancellor residence and were heading towards TSC area. In reply, the students also hurled brick chips from the rooftop of DU’s Modern Language Institute.  

Earlier around 2pm, the anti-quota protesters gathered in front of the Vice Chancellor residence and chanted slogans against Chhatra League and administration.  

A huge number of police, Bangladesh Border Guard of Bangladesh (BGB) and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) members were deployed in the VC residence to control untoward situation.

Earlier on Tuesday, six people were killed and more than 400 others injured in clashes between Chhatra League activists and quota reform protesters in Rangpur, Chattogram, and Dhaka.

The UGC in a notice, signed by its Secretary Dr Ferdous Jaman, gave a direction to the vice chancellors of all public and private universities to keep their respective institutions closed until further notice.

The government announced the closure of all schools, colleges, madrasas, and polytechnic institutes in the country, citing student security concerns amidst ongoing protests for quota reforms.
