JU hall provost resigns after attack on protesters

The Provost of Bishwakabi Rabindranath Tagore Hall at Jahangirnagar University, Professor Nazmul Hasan Talukder, resigned from his position following an alleged attack on quota protestors by activists of the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) in the early hours of Tuesday.

Students demanding reforms to the quota system claimed that BCL leaders and members prevented four residents of the dormitory from joining an anti-quota procession that began at 11:30 pm. The protestors also alleged that BCL activists checked their mobile phones in the presence of Professor Talukder.

The protestors were parading through the university with a procession, and when they were passing near the Rabindranath Tagore Hall, some BCL leaders allegedly attacked them, leaving at least five protestors injured.

The injured students included Ahsan Labib, Sohagi Samia, Tauhid Siam, and Mehrab Sifat. A security personnel was also reportedly injured in the attack. Ahsan Labib was sent to the University Medical Center, while Sohagi Samia was taken to Enam Medical College Hospital for primary treatment.
