2 killed in Cox’s Bazar after heavy rainfall causes landslide

Two people were killed in separate landslides triggered by incessant rainfall in Cox’s Bazar on Wednesday morning. 

The incidents took place at wards no. 6 and 7 of the municipality area in the district. 

Cox’s Bazar Municipality Mayor Mahbubur Rahman Chowdhury confirmed the deaths to Jago News.

The deceased were identified as Jamila Begum, 30, wife of Mohammad Karim, of Dakkhin Pollaniakata at ABC Ghona in 6 no. ward and Nazmul Hasan, 6, son of Saiful, of Sikder Bazar in 7 no. ward.  

Quoting local people, Mayor Mahbubur said the landslides occurred due to heavy rainfall.

Quoting Jamila’s husband Karim, local resident Monsur said the incident of landslide occurred when his family was preparing breakfast. Jamila was buried when a chunk of mud collapsed  from a hill on their house in ward no. 6. She was recovered and taken to the hospital where she was declared dead.   

Meanwhile, the six-year-old Nazmul Hasan was seriously injured when a wall of mud house fell on him due to heavy rain. He was recovered and taken to the hospital where the doctor declared him dead. 

Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital’s resident medical officer Dr Muhammad Ashikur Rahman said Nazmul and Jamila were brought dead to the hospital at 8am and 8:45am respectively.

In this connection, Alamgir, Inspector and In-charge of Cox’s Bazar city police outpost, said he heard the news of the deaths of two people but he could not go to the spot. The ground floor of the police outpost was inundated by rain water.
