UP chairman shot dead in Munshiganj

A union parishad (UP) chairman was shot dead in Tongibari upazila of Munshiganj on Sunday afternoon over a school managing committee election.

Dead Sumon Halder was the chairman of Panchgaon union in the upazila.

Tongibari Police Station officer-in-charge Molla Shoeb Ali said UP chairman Sumon extended support to Dewan Moniruzzaman, a president candidate in the election of Panchgaon Wahed Ali High School's managing committee.

Nur Mohammad, supporter of another candidate Milon, locked in an altercation with Sumon over the issue. At one stage, Milon's other followers opened fire on him, leaving him wounded, Shoeb Ali said.

Later, he was taken to Tongibari Upazila Health Complex and from there, he was referred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital but he died on the way, the OC added.
