Sohel Chowdhury murder: Aziz Mohammad among 3 get life term
A Dhaka court has sentenced three people, including businessman Aziz Mohammad Bhai, to life imprisonment and acquitted six others in the case filed over the murder of actor Sohel Chowdhury in 1998.
Judge Arunabh Chakrabarty of Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal-2 passed the order on Thursday.
Two other convicts are Trums Club owner Afakul Islam alias Banti Islam and Adnan Siddiqui.
The six acquitted persons are Ashish Rai Choudhury alias Bottle Chowdhury, Tariq Sayeed Mamun, Faruque Abbasi, Sanzidul Islam Emon, Selim Khan and Harun-Or-Rashid alias Leather Liton.
Sohel Chowdhury was shot dead on December 17, 1998, in the capital's Banani area and his brother Touhidul Islam filed the case with Gulshan Police Station the next day. Police on July 30, 1999, filed charge-sheet against nine and Dhaka 3rd Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court on October 30, 2001, had framed charges in the case.
The case was later transferred to Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal-2 for further proceedings.
Following a petition of Adnan Siddiqui in the case, the High Court stayed the proceedings of the trial on February 17, 2004. The stay was withdrawn over the case proceedings on February 27, 2022.
