Upazila polls: 418 BGB platoons deployed in first phase

A total of 418 platoons of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) have been deployed across the country in the first phase in order to conduct the 6th upazila parishad elections scheduled for Wednesday in a fair manner.

Md Shariful Islam, Public Relations Officer of the BGB, said this on Tuesday morning.

He said the BGB will work as a striking force to help the civil administration under the ‘in aid to civil power’ from May 6 to 10. 

However, the government has declared May 8 as general holiday for elections in 140 upazilas to allow the voters to cast their votes without any hassle.

The upazila elections will take place in four phases. Elections in the second phase will be held on May 23, in the third phase on May 29, and in the fourth phase on June 5.

There are 495 upazilas in the country.
