Raihan Sharif, a Community Medicine lecturer at Shaheed Mansur Ali Medical College and Hospital in Sirajganj, has been suspended temporarily over shooting a student inside a classroom.

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare issued a gazette notification in this regard on Wednesday.

Earlier on Monday afternoon, Arafat Ashik Tomal, a 3rd year student of the medical college, was admitted to the hospital after he was shot and wounded by the teacher in the classroom. The teacher was detained and his firearm was confiscated by the police.

Later, the victim’s father, Abdullah Al Amin, filed a case against the teacher with the Sadar Police Station.

However, a three-member committee was formed, headed by the Additional Director General (Administration) of the Directorate General of Medical Education (DGME) Dr Baizid Khoorshid Riaz to investigate the incident.

The two other members of the committee are DGME Director (Medical Education) Prof Dr Md Mohiuddin Matubbar and Deputy Secretary of Medical Education and Family Welfare Division Mohammad Mohsin Uddin.
