BCL leader remanded over housewife gang rape at JU

Four people, including a leader of Jahangirnagar University (JU) unit Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), have been put on a three-day remand in a case over the gang rape of a housewife on the campus.

They are Mostafizur Rahman, international affairs secretary of JU unit BCL, and students Sabbir Hasan, Sagor Siddique, and Hasanuzzaman.

Dhaka Senior Judicial Magistrate Rabeya Begum passed the order on Sunday after police had produced them before the court, seeking a seven-day remand.

Earlier on Saturday night, a housewife was gang raped in a bush adjacent to Mir Mosharraf Hossain Hall after confining her husband in the dormitory.

On the night, the victim's husband lodged a case against six people with Ashulia Police Station in this connection.

After the case filing, police arrested the four mentioned above early Sunday, Dhaka district Police's Additional Superintendent (Crime and Ops) Abdullahil Kafi said in a press conference.

He said allegations of rape were brought against Mostafizur and Mamun, an outsider, and four were accused of assisting the two to flee and beating the victims.

The victim was sent to the One Stop Crisis Center at Dhaka Medical College Hospital for her medical checkup, he added.

The victim said Mamunur, one of the accused, lived in their house on rent and on Saturday evening, he called her husband at Jahangirnagar University.

Later, Mamun asked her, too to come to the campus with his bag and baggage, saying he would no longer live in their house and stay with Mostafizur at Mir Mosharraf Hossain Hall.

When she went there, he and Mostafiz took her to a bush adjacent to the dormitory and violated after confining her husband in a room.

However, the JU unit BCL said it expelled Mostafiz from his position over the incident and recommended to the center to expel him permanently.
