Youth sentenced to death for killing ex-wife

A court in Manikganj on Thursday sentenced a young man to death for killing his former wife after throwing acid.

Condemned convict Md Naim Mollick, 32, is a resident of Betila village in Sadar upazila of the district.

Manikganj District and Sessions Judge Court Judge Jatashree Samadder delivered the verdict. The court also fined him Tk 20,000.

Sources in court said Naim Mollick threw acid on Sathi Akter, daughter of Abdus Satter, a resident of Katakhali Ferazipara under Dhankora union in Saturia upazila, on January 28, 2022, when she was asleep, leaving her injured. Her mother and sister also suffered burn injuries in the incident.

They were first taken to Manikganj Sadar Hospital and from there, Sathi was admitted to Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery, Dhaka for better treatment where she succumbed to her injuries after 12 days.

The victim's maternal uncle Lal Mia filed a case against Naim with Saturia Police Station in this connection.

Family sources said Sathi divorced Naim on September 10, 2021, over family conflict and alleged physical assault on her by him for dowry.
