Evaly MD Rassel gets bail in cheque fraud case

A Dhaka court has granted bail to the e-commerce platform Evaly Managing Director Mohamamd Rassel in a cheque fraud case.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Ali Haider passed the order on Wednesday after hearing a bail petition filed by Rassel.

Earlier on Monday, the same court issued an arrest warrant against Evaly MD Rassel and his wife Shamima Nasrin, also Chairman of the e-commerce company in the case.

According to the case statement, a customer named Tanveer Hossain ordered a motorbike from Evaly, paying Taka 2.45 lakh through mobile banking on March 13, 2021. Though Evaly was supposed to deliver him the motorbike within 45 days of ordering, the accused failed to do that. The e-commerce authorities on September 13, 2021, gave him a cheque, which Tanveer tried to cash. But the cheque was bounced. He later sent the accused legal notice on October 14, 2023 and subsequently filed the case.

On December 19 last year, Rassel was released from Kashimpur Central Jail-1 in Gazipur on bail.

Rassel and his wife Shamima Nasrin were arrested by RAB on September 16, 2021, during a raid at their Mohammadpur home after a customer filed an embezzlement case against them with Gulshan Police Station.

Later, five other embezzlement cases were lodged against the couple with Dhanmondi Police Station and the court.

Nasrin was freed from jail on April 6, 2022.
