The eight injured survivors of the Benapole Express train fire, who are now undergoing treatment in the capital’s Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery (SHNIBPS), are in critical condition.

“All of their respiratory systems have been burnt, leaving them in critical condition,” Dr Samanta Lal Sen, Chief Coordinator of the SHNIBPS, said at a press conference on Saturday.

He said a patient named Asif Mohammad Khan had 8% burns on his body. Another person named Nafiz Alam suffered 5% burns. The respiratory tracts of the remaining individuals, including these two, have suffered burns. We are monitoring everyone.

On Friday night, four passengers were killed as the miscreants set the Benapole Express train on fire at Gopibagh area of Sayedabad in Dhaka.

The deceased could not be identified as the bodies were beyond recognition. The bodies were kept at the morgue of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).

Earlier, on 19 December, four people including a child were killed after miscreants set fire to Dhaka-bound Mohanganj Expres in the capital’s Tejgaon area.
