RMG workers stage demo in Mirpur for salary hike
A group of ready-made garment workers staged demonstrations in capital Dhaka's Mirpur area on Tuesday demanding an increase in their salaries.
They blocked the main road of Mirpur-14 around 8:30 am and staged a demonstration and then, took a position at Mirpur-10 intersection, leaving vehicular movement suspended in the areas, said Kafrul Police Station officer in-charge Farukul Alam.
After 11 am, the laborers left the roads and the vehicular movement returned to normal, he added.
Workers who took part in the demonstrations said they were discriminated against in the new wage structure and many of them said their salary increased only 20 to 30 percent which is not consistent with inflation.
Besides demanding salary hikes, the workers also sought justice over the oppression of their fellow workers.
Following the recent labor movements for salary rise in different parts of the country, the government on November 7 raised the minimum wage of the RMG workers to Tk 12,500 from Tk 8,000 which will come into effect on December 1.
