Internet and telecom services blackout exercise in city tonight
Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has decided to hold an internet and mobile network blackout drill on Monday night in the capital aiming to see if the authorities could shut down internet and mobile operation if emergency or terrorist attacks take place in future.
BTRC took the new decision of shutting down the network as officials BTRC earlier said thet they had faced some problems to shut down the internet connection in Gulshan area during the attack on Holey Artisan Bakery on July 1, where gunman killed 24 people including 17 foreign diners and two police officials.
BTRC chairman Shahjahan Mahmood said, ‘We’ll shut down internet operation in any area tonight to have an experience so that we can take immediate action in case of emergency.’
He also said there will be such drills in other cities of the country in phases.
Internet Service Providers Association of Bangladesh will assist the telecom regulatory authority in the blackout exercise, Mahmood added.
