Dinajpur mayor Syed Jahangir jailed for 1 month
The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC) has sentenced Dinajpur municipality mayor and BNP leader Syed Jahangir Alam to one month in jail for his derogatory remark about Justice M Enayetur Rahim.
A five-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan passed the order on Thursday.
Syed Jahangir was also fined Tk 1 lakh and asked to surrender before Dinajpur court in a week.
Law enforcers will arrest him if he fails to surrender before the court within that time, the apex court said in the order.
Earlier on August 24, Syed Jahangir sought unconditional apology appearing in the Supreme Court for his derogatory comment on the apex court justice.
The SC directed Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) chairman to immediately remove the video containing Jahangir’s comment from internet platforms.
Syed Jahangir made the derogatory remark against the Justice at BNP’s programme on August 3. Later, four SC lawyers - Harun-or-Rashid, Mahfujur Rahman Roman, Md Moniruzzaman Rana and Shafiq Rayhan Shaon, filed a petition with the Appellate Division seeking necessary directives.
