Krishi Market fire guts over 500 shops, claim traders
The massive fire, which broke out at Mohammadpur Krishi Market early Thursday, gutted more than five hundred shops, claimed traders.
There were legally and illegally run 700-800 shops in the market.
The traders said the fire originated at Haque Bakery and soon engulfed the adjacent shops. As the market was closed, the fire service members could not enter at first.
Mahbub Hasan, owner of a cloth shop, said his shop had goods worth Tk 5 lakh, all of them were gutted in the fire.
Jakir Hossain, a jewelry shop owner, said he could not retrieve anything from his shop located inside the market.
However, Lt Col Md Tajul Islam, Director (Operations and Maintenance) of Fire Service Directorate, said there was no fire safety in the market.
It is mentionable that the fire broke out at the market at 3:43am and was brought under control at 9:25am.
