Sagar-Runi murder: Probe report submission deferred for 100th time
A Dhaka court has fixed September 11 for submission of the probe report in the murder case of journalist couple Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Runi.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Rashidul Alam passed the order on Monday - making it the 100th extension of the deadline - after the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) failed to submit the report.
Sagar, news editor at the private TV channel Maasranga, and his wife, Runi, senior reporter at ATN Bangla, were killed on February 11, 2012, in their rented flat in the capital's West Razabazar area. Their only son, Mahir Sarowar Megh, then 5, was home at that time.
Nousher Ali Roman, brother of Runi, filed a case at Sher-e-Bangla police station the following day in connection with the murders.
A sub-inspector of the police station first investigated the sensational murder case. Four days after he took the charge, the case was transferred to DB police.
On April 18, 2012, the High Court, in an order, shifted the case to the RAB for investigation, as the former had expressed its inability to resolve the case.
At least eight people, including Rafiqul Islam, Bakul Miah, Masum Mintu, Kamrul Hasan alias Arun, Abu Sayeed, two security guards of the couple’s house, Palash Rudra Paul and Enamul Hoque and the couple’s "family friend" Tanveer Rahman had been arrested; Tanveer was later released on bail.
