Ex-SP Babul acquitted in DSA case filed by PBI Chief
A Dhaka tribunal on Tuesday acquitted former Superintendent of Police (SP) Babul Akter and his father Md Abdul Wadud from a case filed by Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) Chief Banaj Kumar Majumdar under Digital Security Act (DSA).
The tribunal, however, took cognisance of the charges against Babul’s brother Md Habibur Rahman Labu and journalist Elias Hossain in the same case.
Judge Julfiker Hayet of Dhaka Cyber Tribunal passed the order and also issued an arrest warrant against Elias as he was shown fugitive in the charge sheet.
Babul’s lawyer Shishir Monir confirmed the matter to Jago News.
Earlier on April 9, Md Robiul Islam, Investigation Officer of the case and Inspector (operations) of Dhanmandi Police Station, submitted the charge sheet to the court.
On September 27 last year, the PBI chief filed the case against Babul and three others with the police station on charges of spreading false and untrue information regarding the Mitu murder case.
Babul’s wife Mitu was shot dead near GEC Intersection in Chattogram on June 5, 2016 as she was taking her son to school.
Babul, a police super at the time, filed a case in 2016 after his wife was murdered in a daylight. Later Babul himself became the key suspect in the case following the PBI investigation.
Mitu’s father filed another case after the PBI submitted its final investigation report. But the court dismissed that case and revived the case filed by Babul himself.
