Eight including ex-Sonali Bank MD get jail terms

A court in Dhaka has sentenced eight people, including the former managing director of Sonail Bank, to jail terms for embezzling money from the bank.

Those who were jailed are Sonali Bank's former managing director Humayun Kabir, its deputy managing director (DMD) Mainul Haque, GM Noni Gopal Nath, AGMs Saiful Hasan and Kamrul Hossain Khan, DGM Safiz Uddin Ahmed, Paragon Printing and Packaging Limited's managing director Saiful Islam Raza and its director Abdullah Al Mamun.

Judge Md Iqbal Hossain of the Special Judge's Court-5 of Dhaka handed down the verdict on Thursday.

Of them, Humayun, Noni Gopal, Saiful Hasan, Saiful Islam and Abdullah Al Mamun were sentenced to 17 years in jail under two separate sections while Safiz, Kamrul and Mainul were given eight years in prison.

The court also acquitted the bank's former DGM Altaf Hossain as he was found not guilty.

According to the case statement, the Anti-Corruption Commission's assistant director Eramul Haque Chowdhury on January 1 of 2013 filed a case against the accused with Ramna Police Station, Dhaka on an allegation of embezzling around Tk 2.16 crore from Sonali Bank.
