Voting ends in BCC, KCC polls
Voting in the Barishal City Corporation (BCC) and Khulna City Corporation (KCC) polls ended on Monday.
Balloting for the elections started at 8am and continued till 4pm without any break.
In BCC polls, seven candidates, who are competing for the mayoral post, are Awami League-backed Abul Khair Abdullah Khokon Serniabat (Boat), Jatiya Party’s Iqbal Hossain Taposh (Plough), Islami Andolon Bangladesh’s Mufti Syed Muhammad Faizul Karim (Hand fan), Zaker Party’s Md Mizanur Rahman Bachhu (Rose) and independent candidates Md Kamrul Ahsan Rupon (Table clock), Md Asaduzzaman (Elephant) and Md Ali Hossain Hawlader (Deer).
Besides, 119 candidates are in the race for the post of general councillor and 42 candidates for the reserved councillor post.
Faizul Karim allegedly came under attack by the supporters of Abul Khair Abdullah Khokon Serniabat during the vote casting.
The incident took place at Sabera Khatun Girls High School polling centre at 22 no ward in the city.
Faizul filed a written complaint to the Returning Officer and Police Commissioner over the matter.
In the KCC polls, five candidates, who are vying for mayoral post, are Awami League backed Talukder Abdul Khaleque (Boat), Jatiya Party’s Shafiqul Islam Modhu (Plough), Bangladesh Islami Andolon’s Moulana Abdul Awal (Hand Fan), Zaker Party’s S M Sabbir Hossain (Rose) and independent candidate Shafiqur Rahman Mushfiq (Table clock).
A total of 173 candidates, including five for mayoral, 134 for 31 general councilors’ and 39 for 10 reserved female councilors’ posts, are contesting.
