National Committee to stage nationwide demo on Saturday

The National Committee to Protect Oil, Gas, Mineral Resources, Power and Port will stage demonstrations across the country on Saturday protesting the police attack on its march towards the prime minister’s office on Thursday.

Committee member secretary Anu Muhammad announced the new programme while addressing a press conference at Mukti Bhaban in Dhaka this afternoon, reports United News of Bangladesh.

As part of the programme, the committee will organise a protest rally at 4:30pm on the day in front of the National Press Club in the city.

He said the committee will continue its movement until the government cancels the Rampal power plant project.

Anu Muhammad alleged that police launched attacks on their peaceful procession earlier on Thursday that left about 50 activists injured and hospitalised.

He mentioned that police also arrested some of their activists from the spot.

Anu Muhammad said the committee had a plan to submit an ‘open letter’ to the prime minister about the Rampal power plant project, but police intercepted the peaceful procession by charging baton and firing teargas shells.

Demanding immediate release of the arrested activists, Anu Mohammad said the committee will announce further programme from Thursday’s rally.

Other committee leaders like Ruhin Hossain Price and Bazlur Rashid Feroz were present at the programme.
