College girl hacked dead for refusing marriage proposal

A college student in Gazipur has been hacked to death allegedly by a man for refusing his marriage proposal.

The victim, Rabeya Akter, 23, obtained GPA-5 in Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) 2020 from Joydebpur Govt Women's College and was the daughter of Abdur Rouf, a resident of South Salna in the city.

Sadar Metro Police Station officer in-charge Ziaul Haque said Md Saidul Islam, the Imam of Tekibari Jame Masjid in Salna Tekibari area, would teach Rabeya's two younger sisters Khadiza and Zannat Quran at their home.

At one stage, he gave Rabeya, who was preparing to go to Europe on a student visa, a marriage proposal but she straightly refused that angered him and he subsequently would tease her.

On Monday morning, he suddenly started hacking Rabeya at their home and he also hacked her mother and younger sister as they tried to stop him, leaving them injured.

Later, locals rushed them to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmed Medical College and Hospital where Rabeya died.

Subsequently, her mother and sister were referred to Dhaka for better treatment.

The victim's father, however, filed a case in this connection.
