Many people complained of gas leaks in different areas of the capital on Monday night.

The smell of gas was detected in some areas including Mohakhali, Moghbazar, Dilu Road, Bashundhara Residential Area, Badda, Hazaribagh and Dhanmondi in Dhaka.

Many residents left their residences for the streets to avoid casualties from a potential disaster.

Announcement was made from mosques in different areas not to light gas stoves.

Many people also posted statuses on social media, panicking as the smell of gas spread.

However, Ministry of Power, Energy & Mineral Resources in a Facebook post said due to a shutdown of gas supply to industrial plants during Eid, gas pressure in transmission and distribution lines increased, resulting in an overflow. This meant the smell of gas was more prevalent than usual.

The Titas emergency and technical teams are working on the matter, it said.

In this connection, Arif Hossain, Supervisor of Titas Gulshan team said that this problem has arisen due to excess gas pressure.

“We have reduced the pressure. The problem will be solved gradually,” he added.
