5 killed as truck, auto-rickshaw collide in Joypurhat

Five people were killed and another was injured in a head-on collision between a truck and an auto-rickshaw at Malipara area in Khetlal upazila of Joypurhat on Monday morning.

The deceased were identified as Nafiz Islam, 21, son of Rafiqul Islam of Shakharunj area of the upazila, Shahnaz Pervin, 45, wife of Rois Uddin of Itakhola area, Nasirpur Purbapara Jame Mosque Imam Sirajul Islam, 60, auto-rickshaw driver Amzad Hossain, 55 and Shahinur Begum, 38. 

The injured Laila Jahan, Khetlal Upazila Women Affairs Officer, was admitted to Joypurhat Adhunik Zilla Hospital.

Witnesses said, the truck was going to Joypurhat from Khetlal. When the truck reached Malipara area around 11am, it collided head-on with the auto-rickshaw, leaving two people dead on the spot and injured four others. Later, three injured died on the way to Khetlal Upazila Health Complex and Joypurhat Adhunik Zilla Hospital.

Rajibul Islam, Officer-in-charge of Khetlal Police Station, said the truck driver fled away after the accident. The vehicles are in police custody. A legal action is under process in this regard.
