Two Rohingya women held in Kurigram

Two Rohingya women from Cox's Bazar were detained in Kurigram on Thursday afternoon when they were trying to get passports.

The detainees are Khurshida Akter, 19, a resident of Block-D under Balukhali No. 1 Rohingya Camp and Hasina Akter Baby, 18, of Block-9 under Camp No. 27.

Kabir Hossain, deputy assistant director of the Passport Office, Kurigram said the two women came to the office today to apply for passports.

In the applications, they mentioned their identities as Khurshida Akter, daughter of Faizer Sheikh, of South Bauniar Char under Nayarhat union in Chilmari upazila and Hasina Akter, daughter of Azizul Haque, of Beparipara Baliamari village under Sadar union in Sadar upazila of Kurigram respectively, he added.

During the conversations, it seemed that the women are Rohingyas and they were, later, handed over to Sadar Police Station, the official also said.

The police station officer in-charge Khan Mohammad Shahriar said the detainees, in primary interrogation, admitted that they came from Balukhali Rohingya camp in Cox's Bazar.

They applied for passports by making birth certificates to go to Saudi Arabia, he added.
