Rajshahi transport strike called off

The transport owners and workers in Rajshahi called off their indefinite strike shortly after BNP's divisional mass rally in the city ended on Saturday.
Rajshahi Bus Owners Association general secretary Motiul Haque Titu confirmed the withdrawal this afternoon.
He said they withdrew the strike after Rajshahi divisional commissioner had assured them of meeting their demands within a month.
Earlier, an indefinite transport strike was called in all districts of Rajshahi division from December 1 demanding a ban on illegal vehicles on road.
The decision came after a joint meeting of the Rajshahi Division Road Transport Owners-Workers' Unity Council in Natore on November 26.
The transport strike was called at a time when BNP was going to hold its Rajshahi divisional mass rally on December 3.
At that time, the president of the transport owners and workers organization Safkat Manzur Biplob said they announced the strike to press home their 11-point demand, including banning CNG and battery-run auto-rickshaws on road.
Condemning the decision, organizing secretary of BNP Ruhul Kuddus Talukder Dulu has said the strike was called to obstruct the party's December 3 mass rally.
