Anti-smuggling operation ‘Irene’ ends today

The fortnightly-long operation, codenamed ‘Irene’ to crack down on smuggling of small arms, explosives and drugs through the sea, land and air ports of the country will end today.

The Directorate of Customs Intelligence and Investigation (DCII) in association with Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) are conducting drives under the operation.

On the concluding day today, separate drives will be conducted at Shah Amanat International Airport of Chittagong and Osmani International Airport of Sylhet.

Another drive will be also conducted at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport around 4pm.

Along with 33 other countries, ‘Irene’ is being conducted in Bangladesh in coordination with the Regional Intelligence Liaison Office for Asia and the Pacific (RILO AP) of World Customs Organizations (WCO), DCII sources said.

Several drives have been conducted under the operation at Chittagong Sea Port, Benapole land port and other ports of the country so far.
