Police on Wednesday arrested a young man who allegedly took part in the snatching away of two death-row convicts from police custody in capital Dhaka.

Arrested Mehedi Hasan Omi alias Rafi, 24, is an accused in the case filed over the incident, an official of the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime unit of Dhaka Metropolitan Police confirmed.

He said Mehedi Hasan, a member of the outlawed organization Ansar Al Islam's military wing, directly participated in the snatching away of militants and he also took part in blogger Nazimuddin Samad killing.

Earlier on Sunday (November 20), two members of the banned militant outfit Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) sentenced to death in publisher Faisal Arefin Dipan murder case were snatched away from police custody by their cohorts at Dhaka Chief Judicial Magistrate Court premises. 

The escaped convicts are Abu Siddiq Sohel from Aditmari upazila of Lalmonirhat and Moynul Hasan Shamim from Chhatak upazila in Sunamganj.   

After the incident, Dhaka Metropolitan DB Police Chief Harun-Or-Rashid told Jago News four people riding on two motorcycles went to the court area and snatched away the two death-row convicts after spraying something on the eyes of policemen.

Later, a case was filed against 20 people with Kotwali Police Station in capital Dhaka in this connection.
