Jamaat Ameer's son Dr Rafat sent to jail

A court in Dhaka has sent Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman's son Dr Rafat Sadik Saifullah and another accused to jail in a case under the Anti-Terrorism Act.

The other accused is Arif Fahim Chowdhury.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Tariqul Islam on Saturday passed the order after a hearing.

Earlier, police produced them before the court after the completion of three-phase remand and sought to confine them in prison until the investigation ends while their lawyer prayed for bail. 

Hearing both parties, the court turned down their bail petition and sent them to jail.

Earlier on November 17, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Shafi Uddin placed them on a day remand after a hearing.

On November 14, they were put on a two-day remand by Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Jashim.

On November 10, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Jashim granted police three days to interrogate them.

The Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) arrested Dr Rafat from Sylhet district on November 9 for his alleged involvement in militancy.

Confirmed the arrest to Jago News at that time, CTTC Chief Additional Police Commissioner Md Asaduzzaman said three members of Ansar Al Islam were arrested from Sayedabad area in capital Dhaka on November 1.

The arrestees are Sejadul Islam Sahab Tanim alias Isa alias Arafat alias Anwar alias Anbir, 24, Md Jahid Hasan Bhuiyan, 21, and Syed Riaz Ahmed, 22. 

In interrogation, they told police that they all joined Ansar Al Islam through Dr Rafat, the Sylhet region chief coordinator of the banned militant outfit, he said.

The trio also gave their statement in court on November 6 under Section 164 where they disclosed the names of Jamaat Ameer's son and other associates, Asaduzzaman said.

In continuation of this, Dr Rafat was arrested from Sylhet, the official added.

The CTTC chief also said Dr Rafat has links with Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA) and Rohingya Solidarity Organisation (RSO).
