Babul Akter remanded in Banaj Kumar's case
A court in Dhaka on Thursday placed former police superintendent (SP) Babul Akter on a day remand in a case filed by Police Bureau of Investigation Chief Banaj Kumar Majumdar.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Arafatul Rakib passed the order after a bail hearing.
On the day, police sought a seven-day remand against him while the defence prayed bail but the court rejected his bail plea and granted a day remand.
Earlier, he was shown arrested in the case after police had produced him before the court from Keraniganj Central Jail this morning.
Earlier on September 27, PBI Chief Banaj Kumar Majumdar lodged the case against journalist Elias Hossain, Babul Akter, his father Md Abdul Wadud Mia, 72, and his brother Md Habibur Rahman, 45, with Dhanmondi Police Station, Dhaka under the Digital Security Act and Special Power Act.
Banaj Kumar said the aforesaid four have been accused of providing and spreading false information in the Mahmuda Khanam Mitu murder case, communal incitement, and damaging images of the PBI, and Bangladesh.
Expatriate journalist Elias recently published a video on YouTube over the investigation of the Mitu murder case where he alleged Banaj Kumar tortured Babul Akter in remand.
In the video, he also alleged the PBI chief intentionally made the former SP accused in the case and staged false witnesses.
After the publication of the video, Babul Akter filed a case appeal against six police officials, including Banaj Kumar, but court rejected the petition.
On June 5, 2016, Mahmuda Khanam Mitu was shot and stabbed to death on the way to pick up her son from a school bus on OR Nizam Road in Chattogram city.
Later, her husband Babul Akter lodged a case against unidentified people with the Panchlaish Police Station in Chattogram in this connection.
Subsequently, PBI claimed that they found Babul's involvement in the case.
On May 12 last year, Mitu's father former police inspector Mosharraf Hossain filed a case against eight people, including Babul, over the murder.
On that day, he was shown arrested by PBI and sent to jail following a court order.
