11 JCD men remanded over attack on ex-justice Manik

A court in Dhaka has placed 11 leaders and activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal on a two-day remand in a case filed over the attack on former Supreme Court Justice AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik.

Those remanded are joint general secretary of Chhatra Dal central committee Maksudur Rahman Sumit, former joint general secretary of Jagannath University unit JCD Md Shakhawat Hossain Khan and members of Dhaka's Kalabagan unit JCD Md Robin Khan, Md Sagor, Md Jashim Uddin Bhuiyan, Md Harun Or Rashid, Motiur Rahman, Shamim Rahman, Jamal Hossain, Ariful Islam and Abu Taher.    

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Debdas Chandra Adhikary on Thursday passed the order after police had produced them before the court, seeking a five-day remand.

The former SC justice, Manik, said he came under the attack on Wednesday afternoon when he was going to give an interview to a private TV channel in Karwanbazar from Motijheel. 

The leaders and activists of BNP-Jamaat attacked him, his car driver and his bodyguard when his car reached Paltan area in capital Dhaka. They also vandalized his car, he alleged. 

Later, his bodyguard Md Rafiqul Islam lodged a case with Paltan Police Station in this connection. As many as 40 to 50 unnamed leaders and activists of BNP were accused in the lawsuit.
