Municipal mayor among 3 shot in Mirsharai

A municipal mayor and two others were shot in Mirsharai upazila of Chattogram district on Friday morning over sand lifting from the Feni River.

The injured are Chattogram's Baraiyarhat municipal mayor Rezaul Karim Khokan, Hinguli union Awami League leader Ashok Sen, 42, and Jubo League activist Sayed Khan Dukhu, 35.

It was learned that Feni's Fazilpur union parishad chairman Mojibul Haque Ripon has long been extracting sand illegally from the Feni River in Mirsharai.

Baraiyarhat municipal mayor Khokan went there on Thursday to lift sand for a power plant to be built in Karerhat area but Ripon's men held their two boats.

The men of the chairman opened fire on Khokan and his men when they went to him this morning to resolve the matter, leaving three injured.

Mirsharai Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Dr Minhaz Uddin told Jago News three bullet-hit injured, including Khokan, were brought to hospital and later, sent to Chattogram Medical College Hospital for better treatment. 

However, Fazilpur union parishad chairman Mojibul Haque Ripon could not be reached for comment in this regard.

Jorarganj Police Station officer in-charge Nur Hossain Mamun told Jago News they heard several people, including mayor Rezaul Karim Khokan received bullet injuries and now going to the spot.
