Death toll from Panchagarh boat capsize rises to 69

The death toll from the boat capsize in the Karatoya River in Panchagarh district rose to 69 as another body was recovered on Wednesday.

The deceased was a man, around 30, but his detailed identity could not be known yet.

Panchagarh Fire Service and Civil Defence assistant director Mahbubul Islam said this afternoon.

However, three people, including a child, still remained missing in the incident.

They are Himaloy, son of Biren Chandra, a resident of Moynadighi Khalpara area, Bhupen, son of Modan of Hatibhuba, Suren, son of Swagendranath Borman of Sakoa Bhangapara, in Boda upazila, and child Joya Rani, daughter of Dhirendranath of Khatiapara in the district.

Earlier, the Hindu community people of Boda, Panchpir, Mareya, and Banghari areas were going to Badeshwari temple on a boat on Sunday afternoon on the occasion of Mahalaya.

The boat sank in the middle of the river in Aulia Ghat area under Mareya union, causing casualties and missings.
