Panchagarh boat capsize: Death toll reaches 66
The death toll from the boat capsize in the Karatoya River reached 66 as five more bodies were recovered from the different parts of the river in Boda upazila of Panchagarh on Tuesday noon.
Deepankar Roy, Panchagarh Additional District Magistrate and the Chief of the investigation committee formed over the incident, confirmed the matter to Jago News.
Sheikh Md Mahabubul Alam, Assistant Deputy Director of Fire Service and Civil Defence of Panchagarh, said, our rescue operation was postponed on Monday evening and it started again at 5:30am today. 16 more bodies were recovered till 1:30pm. The rescue operation will continue to recover those who are still missing.
Earlier on Monday, twenty-five more bodies were recovered from the river.
Of the total deceased, 45 were identified as Hashem Ali, 70, Shyamali Rani, 14, Lakkhi Rani, 25, Amal Chandra, 35, Shobha Rani, 27, Dipankar, 3, Piyonta, Rupali alias Khuki Rani, 35, Pramila Rani, 55, Dhanbala, 60, Sunita Rani, 60, Falguni, 45, Pramila Devi, Jotish Chandra, 55, Tara Rani, 25, Saneka Rani, 60, Sofolota Rani, 40, Bilash Chandra, 45, Shyamali Rani alias Shimuli, 35, Ushashi, 8, Tonushri, 5, Brajendra Nath, 55, Jharna Rani, 45, Deep Babu, 10, Suchitra, 22, Kabita Rani, 50, Bejje Bala, 50, Dipshikha Rani, 10, Subrata, 2, Jagadish, 35, Joti Mrinmoy, 15, Genda Rani, Konika Rani, Aduri, 50, Pushpa Rani, Pratima Rani, 50, Surjanath Barman, 12, Harikeshar Barman, 45, Nikhil Chandar, 60, Susheel Chandra, 65, Juthi Rani, 1, Rajmohon Adhikari, 65, Rupali Rani, 38, Pradeep Roy, 30 and Parul Rani, 32.
On Sunday afternoon, 25 people died and many others went missing after the boat with more than 150 passengers capsized in the river.
The overloaded boat sank in the middle of the river while heading towards Badheshwari Temple on the occasion of Mayalaya.
