Mitu murder: Charges pressed against Babul Akter, 6 others

The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) has pressed charges against former Chattogram Police Superintendent Babul Akter and six others in the murder case of his wife Mahmuda Khanam Mitu.

The six other accused are Md Kamrul Islam Shikder alias Musa, Ehteshamul Haque alias Bhola, Md Motaleb Mia alias Wasim, Md Anwar Hossain, Md Khairul Islam alias Kalu, and Shahjahan Mia.

Abu Zafar Mohammad Omar Faruque, the investigation officer and PBI inspector (Chattogram Metro Zone), submitted the charge sheet to Chattogram Metropolitan Police's additional deputy commissioner (prosecution) Kamrul Islam on Tuesday afternoon, making Babul Akter the main accused.

At that time, PBI police superintendent (metro circle) Kazi Naim Hasan was present. October 10 is scheduled for the next hearing of the case in Chattogram Metropolitan Magistrate Court. 

Out of the seven accused in the charge sheet, Babul, Wasim, Shahjahan, and Anwar are in jail, Ehteshamul is on bail while Musa and Kalu are on the run, he said.

PBI, however, recommended acquitting accused Saidul Islam Shikder alias Sakku, Nurunnabi, Md Rashed, and Abu Naser from charges.

Of them, Rashed and Nurunnabi were killed in a reported gunfight with police a week after the murder.

Abu Yusuf, additional police superintendent (legal ad media) of PBI headquarters in Dhaka, confirmed the matter to Jago News.

He said a charge sheet has been submitted making Babul Akter the main accused. Besides, six others have been accused in the charge sheet where 97 people made witnesses.

At the court premises, PBI SP Naima Hasan said, "Those against whom evidence was found in the investigation have been made accused in the charge sheet."

CMP ADC (prosecution) Kamrul said the charge sheet will be presented before Chattogram Metropolitan Court as per rules.

Then, case files, including the charge sheet, will be sent to Metropolitan Session Judge Court, Chattogram for trial as it is a murder case.

On June 5, 2016, Mitu was shot and stabbed to death on the way to pick up her son from a school bus on OR Nizam Road in Chattogram city.

Later, SP Babul lodged a case against unidentified people with the Panchlaish Police Station in Chattogram in this connection.
