Ex-MP Liton Murder: Death row convict arrested

Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested a death row convict in a case filed for the murder of former Awami League MP from Gaibandha-1 (Sundarganj) constituency Manjurul Islam Liton.

The arrestee is Chandan Kumar Roy, 43.

He was arrested from Bhomra in Satkira on Sunday. 

Commander Khandaker Al Moeen, RAB’s Legal and Media Wing Director, confirmed the matter at a press conference at its Media Centre in the capital’s Karwan Bazar on Monday noon.

He said Chandan went into hiding in India with the help of his relatives 15-16 days after the murder of Liton. Later, an Interpol red notice was issued for his arrest.

Liton was shot to death by miscreants at his residence on 31 December 2016.

His sister filed a case against several people with Sundarganj Police Station.

Detectives arrested Abdul Quader Khan, a former Jatiya Party MP from Gaibandha-1 constituency, on February 21, 2017 from his home. Five days later, he confessed before a court to his involvement in the killing.

On April 30, 2017, police submitted a charge-sheet against eight people, including Quader.

On November 28, 2019, a Gaibandha court awarded death sentence to seven in the murder case.

The convicted are - Quader, his personal secretary Shamsuzzoha, driver Abdul Hannan, house assistant Shahin Mia, Mehedi Hasan, Anwarul Islam Rana and Chandan. Of them, Chandan was a fugitive.
