Nine killed in Sirajganj lightning strikes

Nine people were killed and four others injured in lightning strikes in Ullapara upazila of Sirajganj district on Thursday afternoon.

The deceased were Akter Hossain, 65, Mokam Hossain, 55, Shamser Ali, 52, Shahin, 32, and Monnaf Hossain, 20, residents of Shibpur village, and Abdul Kuddus, 60, Shah Alam, 42, Ritu Khatun, 14, and Zannati Khatun, 12, of Matikora village in the upazila.

Mahfuz Hossain, assistant police superintendent (Ullapara Circle), confirmed the incident to Jago News.

Panchakroshi union parishad chairman Firoz Ahmed told Jago News that thunderbolts struck 13 farmers when they working in a field in Matikora village around 4:15 pm, leaving five dead on the spot and the rest injured.

Out of the injured, four more died on the way to and at hospital, he added.

Ullapara Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Uzzal Hossain told Jago News nine people, so far, died in the incident.

Around Tk 25,000 was given to the families of each victim, and the dead bodies were handed over to the respective families.
