9 killed as 2 buses collide in Rangpur

At least nine people were killed and more than fifty others injured as two buses collided on Rangpur-Dinajpur highway near Kharubhaj Bridge at Taraganj upazila in Rangpur around 12:30am on Monday. 

Of the deceased, seven were identified as Anwar Hossain, 35, of Harialkuthi area in Taraganj, Mohsin Hossain, 42, of Kundal area at Syedpur in Nilphamari, Anisur Rahman, 48, Dhananjoy Roy, 27, Jibon Rahman, 28, Jewel Rana and Sadek Ali of Gaibandha. 

Dr Shariful Hasan, Director of Rangpur Medical College Hospital (RpMCH), confirmed the number of the deceased to Jago News. 

He said the bodies were kept at the hospital’s morgue.

Locals said, a Thakurgaon-bound bus of Zoana Paribahan collided head-on with a Dhaka-bound bus of Islam Paribahan, leaving five people dead on the spot and injured fifty others. Being informed, police, fire service and local people recovered them and sent to different hospitals. 

Mahbub Morhsed, Officer-in-charge of Taraganj Highway Police Station, said five dead bodies were recovered from the spot. At least 50 injured people were admitted to RpMCH and of them some are in critical conditions.

Md Farhaduzzaman, a doctor of RpMCH’s emergency department, said four people died while undergoing treatment here early in the morning.
