Man gets life for raping speech-impaired

A court in Dinajpur district on Thursday sentenced a man to life term imprisonment for raping a speech-impaired girl in Chirirbandar upazila.

The court also fined Tapan Chandra Roy, 38, a resident of Osurkot Memberpara in Parbatipur upazila, Tk 10,000, and in default, he will have to serve three months in jail.

The Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal, Dinajpur judge (senior district and sessions judge) Sharif Uddin Ahmed handed down the verdict this afternoon.

Confirming the matter, prosecution lawyer advocate Tayeba Begum said Tapan violated the speech-impaired girl in Bishwanatpur village under Punpatti union on March 19, 2019. 

Later, the victim's father lodged a case with Chirirbandar Police Station in this connection, she said.

"We have been able to prove the rape incident in court in three years, and we are satisfied with the verdict," she added.
