HC asks ACC to probe allegations against Ramna OC's asset

The High Court on Sunday directed the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) to conduct an inquiry within three months into the allegations against Ramna Police Station's Officer-in-Charge (OC) Monirul Islam of amassing a huge amount of wealth illegally.

A High Court Division Bench comprising Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice Khizir Hayat gave this order.

The ACC told the court that it has decided to investigate the colossal possessions Monirul acquired despite working as a 9th-grade official of the state.

Supreme Court lawyer Barrister Syed Sayedul Haque Sumon brought the matter to the attention of the High Court.

When the court drew the attention of ACC lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan, he opined that there should be an inquiry in this matter. Later, the court asked Barrister Suman to file a petition in the High Court seeking an investigation.

According to a report published on a national daily on August 4, Monirul Islam, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Ramna Police Station of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) is building an eight-storey and a duplex house in Dhaka. He also has four plots in Keraniganj and Munshiganj.

Besides, there are accusations of occupying house of a freedom fighter in the city's Mohammadpur Housing Society against him.

According to police sources, as far as information is available, the amount of his assets is much more than this.

At present, he gets a maximum salary of 50 to 70 thousand Taka in the scale of 22 thousand Taka in the ninth grade. The concerned persons believe that he has become the owner of this wealth through irregularities and corruption.

Monirul Islam joined the police service as a sub-inspector (SI) in 1992, when this post was in third grade. In 2012, he got promoted and became a police inspector.

He was in Dhaka range most of the time in his service life of about 30 years.
