The office of the Registrar General, Birth and Death Registration has removed the rule of having mandatory birth certificates of parents for birth registration. From now on, birth can be registered without birth certificates of parents. The birth of a child can be registered by showing either the clearance certificate or the vaccine card issued after birth in the hospital.

Registrar Mirza Tarique Hikmat confirmed the matter to Jago News on Monday afternoon.

He said, according to the law, birth registration is mandatory for everyone. A provision was added in 2021 that those born after 2001 did not have National Identity Cards (NID) as they were not 18. The parents’ birth certificates are essential if we want to give someone an NID after birth. The issue of the unique ID is now being promoted in schools. It would be done automatically if the parents had the birth certificate and if it is with the child’s birth registration then they are digitally identified. This is the international standard. So far, more than 3 million unique IDs have been automatically generated for those who have correctly applied for birth registration.

He also said that for those who are below 18 years of age, giving the birth certificate of parents is mandatory in the application, but we have omitted it. This registration process will continue until further decision.

From January 1, 2021, the birth registration rules were changed and it was said that people born after 2001 must have their parents’ birth certificates to register their births. At that time, the parents expressed their anger after facing different problems while registering the birth.

Tasnim Jannat Safa is 5 years old. As digital birth registration is mandatory for school admission, his parents went to register online and saw that their birth registration is also mandatory. However, as they do not have birth certificates, Safa’s birth registration has not yet been registered.

In this connection, Safa’s mother Khadiza Akter said, we try to apply for Safa’s birth registration online as birth registration is compulsory at the time of school admission. But my and her father’s birth registration is not done yet, so Safa’s birth registration application could not be done. Now, we will do Safa’s birth registration quickly as the complications is removed.
