Covered van kills 5 in Narsingdi

Five vegetable sellers were killed and at least six others injured when a covered van overtook another covered van on Dhaka-Sylhet highway at Mahmudabazar Machineghar area in Raipura upazila of Narsingdi on Thursday morning. 

The deceased were identified as Faruk Miah, 50, son of Fozor Ali, of Mirzapur union of the upazila, Masakin, 35, son of Taiyeb Miah, of Mahmudabad area, Md Ripon Miah, 30, son of Sentu Miah, Shajahan Miah, 50, son of Bachchu Miah and Bachchu Miah, 56, son of Jonab Ali. 

Members of fire service in cooperation with local people rushed the injured people to different hospitals.

Fire service and police sources said, two covered vans lost control while overtaking in the area around 8am. Later, a covered van ran some shops and an easy bike over, killing five vegetable sellers on the spot.   

Azizul Haque, In-charge of Bhairab Bazar Fire Service, said being informed we rushed to the spot and started rescue operation. 

In this connection, Mozammel Hossain, Inspector of Bhairab Highway Police Station, said we are primarily suspecting that the incident took place after the covered van driver fell asleep.
