Flood: Severe food crisis in Sunamganj

The flood situation in Sunamganj has worsened due to heavy rain and onrush of water from the hills. The flood water has inundated 12 upazilas of the district. At least 5 lakh people are marooned and they are facing electricity outage.

All roads, shops, restaurants, pharmacies, government and non-government offices are under the water. The flood has created severe food crisis in the district. In this situation, many people are expressing their anger against public representatives and local administration.

However, local people of Dowarabazar, Chatak, Tahirpur and Bishwambarpur have remained marooned. 

Md Jahangir Hossain, Deputy Commissioner of Sunamganj, said members of Bangladesh Army are going there to rescue the people.

He said, more than 65,000 people took shelter at 220 shelter centres. We are taking those who are marooned to the shelter centres.  

The marooned people said all shops of the market are under the flood water. There is no food in the market.

Nur Hossain, an inhabitant of Kalipur area of the district, said he and his children are without food for last two days. He didn’t get any food in the market and at last he buy a jackfruit for his family. 

“We are trying our best to stay by side of the flood victims. We are distributing cooked food. The rescue work is also on to evacuate marooned people,” said Sunamganj DC.
